Every post I click on here it is mostly just another cunt trolling, so why stay?

A few sites have archived the old posts on obscure films (which is all I cared about)

I thought this site would have admins?... and Jim set up the "I want to be staff to feel really really important begging thread"

So where are these admins? I haven't reported anyone & never will... admins should be 1000 steps ahead of complaints about obvious trolls.

Fuck sake man.... Where are these mods?

I am definitely not blissfully unaware of what's going on. It doesn't take much to figure out a troll post, or to figure out how of them are here. I have actually been avoiding the "General Discussion" forum for the past few days because of the trolls and have been sticking to the individual boards. I guess many others have also been avoiding General Discussion for the same reason which is why it seems that the troll posts seem so dominant here.
I am still sticking to this site though because I believe that this is an excellent community minus the trolls. I agree that this has the same feel of the old IMDb boards. According to Alexa's daily statistics the unique visitors to the site (everyone with the same IP counts as one visitor it is possible that all the sock puppets count as one unique visitor) has remained steady and in fact slightly increased over the past few days. So I'm still hopeful that things will be in order soon :)

All this site needs is an ignore function for the easily triggered crybabies to use. Until then, they can just learn to have a thicker skin.

I'm still finalizing a few things from yesterday's update that have to be done behind the scenes, but the very next things I'll be working on are adding mods and implementing an ignore feature.

Hey Jim people are accusing each others of trolls. It is another form of trolling. Be careful who you make mods. Even the best of users start moderating the wrong way.

From a practical standpoint, it sounds like you are asking for pro-active modding which is nearly impossible, for mods to go looking through thousands of separate movies and shows looking for potential trolling. The report system works, but only when you use it. I don't understand how you can ask for more moderation but at the same time refuse to help out by reporting the bad posts that you see.
The mods haven't been announced yet I don't think, so it's just jim at this stage. he definitely cannot pro actively search for bad posts. if you see something bad, it's not that much effort to just flag it.

Very good points. Somehow I skimmed over that flaw in the OP's logic... Oh well.

Reporting is the best thing to do, at least for now. Jim said he's going to work on an ignore button and getting mods set up.

I'm not sure if the mods will be publicly announced, however. That might cause trolls to target them, or avoid them altogether.

That is so true. (about possibly keeping the mods 'undercover' rather than in uniforms)
You can't please everyone, and especially can't please the ones who are causing the most trouble. When people get their posts deleted or whatnot, they can react with extreme anger against the mods.
On the other hand when something is flagged and you don't remove it because you think it's really not that bad, the one who reported it can get pissed off and want to start nagging at you because you didn't do their bidding.
For an unpaid position, who needs all that abuse?

I get that the trolls would lash out at the mods, but with luck they would be banned anyway (depending on how bad the offending post is, of course).

With people reporting a post, I feel like it wouldn't be quite as severe. Or, perhaps I should say, "I hope it wouldn't be as severe." I would think people doing the reporting would be a bit more polite about it, and with multiple mods the work should go more smoothly and quickly.

Not every infraction will result in a banishment. Sometimes if it's just one bad post , just that post would be removed.
I don't know how jim will set up the rules, but my personal view is that banning should just be reserved for the worst of the worst. It shouldn't be the first weapon in your arsenal.
Sometimes the ones doing the reporting are just as bad as the ones they report (which still might not be ban-worthy, but just equally at fault, is what I mean). People having personal disputes will continuously report each other. You can't assume that whoever comes running to mommy first is the victim and the one they flagged is the perpetrator.

I understand that punishments will vary with the "crime" and that not all reports are honest to say the least. Hopefully Jim has a way of tracking who reports what. I just meant that in general, the ones being reported should be the trolls and the ones doing the reporting normal posters. Of course this isn't a perfect world, so it doesn't always would out that way.

I think it's beyond any question they will last out at mods. We don't even have mods yet, and they've made that more than clear.

I agree with Popcorn Kernel. Trolls aside, even "normal" posters can get pissed off because they feel either they were unfairly flagged themselves (which may or may not have been in retaliation by a real troll they flagged, or even if they didn't, but the troll thinks so, or even when no actual trolls are involved but merely two people who disagree and are overly angry), or a post/poster they reported wasn't removed because the mods disagreed with the person reporting. Also agree that for a volunteer position, no one needs that kind of grief, along with whatever expenditure of time it'll require.

Reporting an individual post shouldn't be as severe, I agree with you there too. Anyone can have a bad day. We do need a way to report both a post and a poster, with some well-thought-out drop-down options. Having a bad day is and should be treated differently from chronically abusing this site, and/or other posters.

Can people see when their posts were reported? Or just the end result of deletion/banning?

Also, for what it's worth, I don't think you're a troll/sock... All this arguing about who is or isn't a troll is starting to get a bit out of hand.

Not that I know of. Of course I don't know what Jim's software is like, but if it's anything like that on IMDB, when a post is reported, the poster may not ever know anything happened, unless (I gather) it was reported enough times that it triggered a red warning before one posts anything else … for a while.

Other than on IMDB, I've never been reported on any other site, so that's my only experience with it.

I co-ran a forum for three or so years, but don't remember ever getting a report on any posts (what can I say, it was generally a very civil and adult group), so don't even know what it's like on the admin/mod end of things.

Thanks. You're right, I'm not a troll or a sock. I'm seeing a lot of people who I know aren't either one, being accused of the same. Not coincidentally, by the same person. It's a commonly used tactic by those who are trying to deflect suspicion off of them. Rarely does it work.

The red warning on IMDB was some boilerplate thing about not breaking rules (even if you hadn't) and to please review them, with link provided. That's as best as I can recall it.

That's a good idea. A posting quota would cut down on the AngryMan, Batman9 types of posters. Maybe one of the options for reporting a post should be repetitive posts. I wouldn't want to see everyone who's posts are reported, especially merely out of vindictiveness, be limited to a quota like that, but in these two instances, it would be appropriate.

Although, in all honesty, personally I'd probably just block them.

Maybe that's the way it was. I never particularly noticed as the only time I saw it was when I posted, or tried to post, two posts, one very soon after the other. Usually I'd read, then occasionally post, then read and maybe occasionally post again, so it's unlikely I'd notice, in general, even if I had a limit.

I'm not very concerned about the type of poster who'd be deterred by a red message, or posting quota. They'd be the types who are at worst merely annoying. Or, as the late great Douglas Adams would have said, Mostly Harmless :)
