1 the racist stuff turned voters off
2 he had already won the previous year
3 dumb and dumber stole tommy lee jones' opening weekend

I remember a lot of grumbling about the racist stuff. Hollywood definitely doesn't want some people remembered in glory. The subject matter boxed him out.

Too many good movies that year... Edward Norton got nominated for American History X a few years later so I doubt it was the racism... it's more like being not voted MVP on a mediocre team.
