Troll bait

I'm guilty of adding a message to an obvious troll thread. I don't argue back, but add a humorous (to me only, I'm sure) comment. THAT IS WRONG.

When we see an obvious troll post or thread, we should avoid it like the plague. Feeding the trolls is what makes them thrive. Zero feedback kills them.

We need to UNITE. It is the only way to ensure the survival of this board.

reply

Agreed.

reply

Yet trolls aren't the reason the message boards of IMDB were closed, even so they stated that. They could easily hire someone who is in charge of moderation. A lot of people are willing to do that in their spare time. or even better, make a voting system like reddit.

But also, don't feed the troll :).

reply

Right, trolls aren't the reason the IMDb message boards were closed, it was all about not being able to monetize them.

I don't like Reddit, and don't think message boards are improved by voting systems. All I need is an ignore option, or be willing to scroll over some posters' posts without putting them on an ignore list, if they aren't too bad.

reply

Did IMDB give a reason that they closed the mbs? I mean other than the bs one that made no sense.

It seems like all of the most active mbs get closed after troll activity Heya or of hand.

They don't want to get sued for allowing people to hey harassed and they don't want to spend money policing.

FB gets tons of complaints and punishes people all the time but their standards make no sense. I got a time out once for using the word "cracker" and it was in reference to a salty snack, not a person.

reply

Agreed. And even if it has some replies, and it's sinking to the bottom, let it sink. replying just bumps it up to the top.

reply

agreed - and ignore button too

reply

An ignore button would be great, as long as clicking didn't bump the message up.

reply

Yeah, try to avoid feeding the trolls. I admit, I was guilty of it back on IMDB, but not here.

I think I read somewhere that we're going to be getting mods or a report button soon.

reply

great!

reply

I hope we get that ignore or report button soon because I already see them creeping. So many message boards were teeming with them on IMDb. It was pretty discouraging to productive conversations. It made posting so unpleasant.

reply

I did it too, by adding a copypasta that no one recognized as such to a troll's thread. I won't do it again.

reply

Haha, I recognized it. But, yeah, feeding the trolls is usually giving them what they so desire...attention.

reply

I agree, Cheeshooter, but as of now I'm 'marking' the obvious trolls by replying in my own way so when Jim gets an Ignore button I can find them easily and put them on ignore right away. On IMDb my list was extensive. Here, I hope it won't be.

reply

The button needs to boot a troll if the get x number of ignores.

reply

That would be especially nice, wouldn't it!!! It'd relieve the majority of having to hit the Ignore button who hadn't already done so, and wouldn't allow the trolls to continue posting/commenting. So far, I've had to mark only 2 as trolls. Yep, that's a very good suggestion, Cheepshooter. πŸ‘

reply

That sounds great, but what happens when a troll and his numerous sock accounts get annoyed with you and give you enough ignores to get you booted? What then?

Any tool has the potential for abuse and the more powerful the tool, the more powerful the abuse.

reply

I was thinking the same thing. Or, the same thing could happen with a troll and several of his or her trolly friendly.

reply

Nope man, better: a shadow ban.

Someone kicked out will always find a way to come back. Someone shadow banned will never know why he can't get people to acknowledge him and will hopefully move on.

reply

That's a good idea!

reply

I third the idea!

reply

I noticed on some other thread that you marked 3 trolls so far. (two of those have gone away in the meantime)

There weren't many trolls around on this site, and we should consider ourselves LUCKY!!! Because yesterday I went to TMDb and I saw that they have a serious troll infestation. All the trolls that were on GOT board are there now, contaminating it. Including some serious doxxers. I fear that if they are banned from there, some of them might come here. We'll need that block button sooner than later, I'm afraid.

reply

Good. Two less. It's been a very pleasant experience being on this site. On the other I'd begin to feel my blood pressure go up within 10 mins.

The trolls coming here was my first thought after I saw the vid 'promoting' MovieChat. Before IMDb shut down (IMO they have), I'd bookmarked every site anyone mentioned plus googled forums, and haven't done anything on any of them except checked them out. They just didn't appeal to me. Too busy, too animated, too this and not enough that.

Ya know what, I think going into a forum after it's been up for quite awhile and being the new kid in town had alot to do with it. Here it feels like we're helping build the foundation. Jim's the owner, yet he'd have nothing if not for us.

I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to him. And to all who're here now. I get on. I get off. My blood pressure's the same.

What time zone are you in at this time, Apris, to still be on?

reply

I'm on CET (central european time). It's 11 am here right now.

Out of all the sites on that list, only moviechat and TMDb appealed to me cause they have a board for every movie. I prefer this one though and I like watching it grow. I occasionally visit TMDb to see if any meaningful conversation is going on on boards that I'm interested in. Not really lol... only the most generic chat possible. The same is the case in here, for this I really miss IMDb and the wild theories that were going on there.

I tried starting some wild theories here, but nobody was interested.

reply

Funny, as I was just having the same sort of thought. Maybe it's more just me and my preferences that I really like getting into the nitty gritty of analyses about shows and movies, but...when I try to do that here or encourage it, I don't seem to get it back that much.

That's not to say there is no meaningful conversation going on here, there is, but not in the same way that it did on IMDb or even like it does on reddit (which I actually don't even like all that much). I don't want to sound ungrateful or greedy or anything, but there still is a lack of engagement on a deeper level here, but...I just chalk that up to the site still being so new, and IMDbers being scattered across several different sites, and people just getting used to the site and focusing on that. I don't blame them, I just miss it and hope more of that type of discussion will return!

reply

I see a meaningful conversation on this board, not so much on individual movie or TV series boards. Which is understandable cause here we are all grouped together, and there it is up to 2 or 3 fans of that particular movie to recreate a meaningful conversation, and this has proven to be tough. As they say, quantity produces quality. We are not quite there yet (nor are any of the other sites)

I also think this is because it's all so new, for instance this site is less than 2 weeks old... it takes time.

I also noticed that many of us admitted to be mostly lurkers while on IMDb. Here we have to jump into the water and start swimming, but this is obviously not in our nature... so it's all going a bit tougher than we expected.

reply

Solid points to all, yes. It'll take an effort on everyone's part really, but hopefully that'll be what unites us as a community. As time passes I expect the individual boards to get better and be more fleshed out.

Now all we can do is post and be patient!

add HappyBuddhist2 to your list.
I think it's the same person as TylerDurden because it is arguing with itself to keep it's threads at the top.

reply

Thank you for the headsup, Popcorn Kernel. I haven't run across that one yet, but if I do.. I don't like 'marking' them, however, to remember them I have to do what I must. I don't have a problem remembering the good contributors, just the others. On the other site I spent a considerable amount of time flip-flopping to add to the ignore list. It wasn't just a matter of ignoring them, which I could do, but it also took their posts & comments completely from my sight and made the boards Much more streamlined.

" because it is arguing with itself to keep it's threads at the top." I do NOT understand the motivation at all!

reply

HappyBuddhist has a bunch of new trolling threads here in General Discussion. Similar style to the BanAllAtheists troll. Starts out saying how peaceful he is and then ends with some call for extreme violence.

I think they need to argue with themselves when no one else is biting at the bait. If nobody replies the thread sinks, so they use sock puppets to keep it active.

She 😏, and no, I'm not 'collecting' trolls. πŸ™„ Please, for the love of all things good, I'm begging you not to label me with that moniker, LOL

Hehe okay, sorry πŸ˜‹

Troll is obsessed with trolls

I think the site should implement a "trusted user" verification. Those people would act as monitors and have the power to delete what they find offensive or irrelevant.
