Could you guys humour me for a second here? While I haven't ventured into other sections of the message boards just yet, I've read several posts by people in here mentioning that trolls have already infected this site.
Is it unreasonable to think that while they're toxic entities, could they be a temporary and effective catalyst for increasing activity in this site? Seeing the replies count go up and 'minutes' next to new threads being frequently and increasingly created could very well be the snare for new users to join.
Please don't hate me too much for even contemplating this :/
Your point makes sense. Having a lot of activity can get new people to join, but then when they start actually clicking around and reading, they might see something that makes them leave forever. It's a double edged sword.
I would expect that most people who were active on IMDB would be used to it and wouldn't scare off that easily.
Yup, it's licking honey from a razor's edge. I would expect that the original IMDb posters would have thicker skin with regards to trolls and therefore not be put off, good point. Personally trolls never bothered me as I have a good ignore filter in my consciousness. There's a lot of bull*** in the world and our brains have limited capacity to process large amounts of information, so I choose to filter out the crap and channel in on the good things.
I think some people who get bothered by trolls are just being cognitively lazy. Or are easily teased due to naivety and immaturity, who knows.
Actually, why do people even get bothered by trolls? I'm curious.
I usually chalk it up to not much experience in online forums. I think the more other communities you have been active in, the thicker your skin gets and the harder you are to shock.
I mean it's all relative. I've seen heavily moderated forums where the slightest disagreement led to people crying and running to the mods because someone was "mean to them" (grown ass adults did this!) . But I have also seen some truly vile stuff that needs to be nipped in the bud. It just depends what you are used to.

Not trolling as I'm genuinely curious as I never ventured into places where it was heavily infested by trolls. They sound like a disease/virus to me :/
The only thing that came to mind that would bother me a lot was the excessive use of intentional spoilers. I f***ing hate that. I always get the urge to smack the sh*t out of anyone who gives me one. Argh. I tried hard not to look at the boards until after I'd watch the movie/tv series because of it.
OMG I hate that too! There's nothing worse than someone blurting out the end of a film before you've seen it! I always make sure I watch the film first before I look it up on the boards anymore.
Don't y'all love the folks that have never watched a certain tv show just come on the board after it's over to say how awful it was and will be cancelled? I never understood it and I don't think I ever will.
Tell me about it. It's as if their primary goal was to make it look like as if there were more haters of a certain show than not. It got kind of annoying after a while but eventually I learned to press on and ignore them.
I learned to adapt to the many trolls that infected IMDB's message boards over the years, so I guess you can say that I'm used to it.
As for any trolls bothering me, I haven't really noticed that. So far, everybody has been extremely friendly. In summary, I love it here! Hats off to Jim and anybody else that is helping him with this fine website!
PS: For my part, I was assuming you were female as your name includes BABE....but then, I guess actually that doesn't necessarily denote anything in particular...!
And guess what? IMDb was consumed by trolls. And guess what? The thousands to maybe millions of posters still declared that the IMDb message boards are of great value and worth, hence the protests against its demise. It makes this place no different than IMDb. These are the IMDb messages and threads transferred into here. These are the trolls. Welcome to the very place you didn't want wiped out.
Unfortunately I think Trolls are just a fact of life for message boards. I simply ignore them, call them out as trolls, or sometimes have fun with them.
