Life of Riley

I remember watching it as a kid, too. One of the original 'father is an idiot' sit-coms.

I remember his black metal lunchbox, I wanted one when I started school but my mother said it wasn't the type for girls so I got a boring blue square box.

Netflix Instant has a program of two “Riley” episodes (Bab’s School Election and Riley’s Operation) and two “Our Miss Brooks” with Eve Arden.

It was great revisiting these two great shows. “Riley” began on radio and came to TV twice. The first season (Oct. 1949-March 1950) starred Jackie Gleason as Riley. The show won an Emmy but was canceled after 26 episodes.

It returned as a series in January 1953 and lasted five seasons, ending in 1958. This is the cast that most people remember with William Bendix, Marjorie Reynolds, Lugene Sanders, Wesley Morgan and Tom D’Andrea.

Thanks for the info, I've never seen the episodes with Jackie Gleason. I was born in 1949 and I remember growing up in the 50's,most families just had 1 TV (with tubes) and people spent their evenings watching the shows. I loved Our Miss Brooks, My Little Margie, September Bride, I Married Joan, Father Knows Best, and of course I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners. I still enjoy watching these shows and the families depicted in these sitcoms were more like normal families than the sitcoms starting in the late 60's and forward. The people in the 50 sitcoms did not have fabulous homes, fancy cars,their kids were not always at the top of their class, etc. The TV schedules were pretty well set too so if you missed a series during the Fall and Winter months because another show was on at the same time, you could watch the reruns in the summer. Now it seems like you watch a show 3 or 4 times and it disappears for a week or two before coming back, sometimes on a different day or time. I quit watching several shows simply because I lost track of them.

Being that it was a filmed show it is likely extant...though I've heard of a few filmed shows becoming lost..."My Living Doll" is incomplete is the archives, while the British series "The Gay Cavalier" (considered similar to "Robin Hood" and other filmed adventure series of the era) is completely lost. But those are rare exceptions to the rule.

I was a "tomboy" and I hated the color pink. Since I was a very young child, I've always preferred black. ( I also hated dolls and preferred to play in the dirt with the boys.)
