Are 4K UHDs the final physical video format?

It seems with every new format since VHS less and less titles get released on physical format. I have a feeling UHD is the final format at least as long as movies and TV shows are filmed as they are.

I tend to think so. The 4K shelf at my local entertainment store, which is a big well-established national franchise, hardly ever changes and there's never anyone else looking at it whenever I'm there.

Titles which I've already purchased in the past and are still 'available' from them on 4K are not being restocked and some of the titles have been poor quality in my opinion. For example, Terminator 2 was the short theatrical edition only (no SE option) and didn't look very good and Star Trek II was so dull in colour tone with such dull red uniforms. Movies I've really wanted in 4K are not forthcoming and Aliens took sooo long to get there, but it has been a disappointing result overall.

Given T2 was offered in theatrical form after the SE form became so commonplace on prior formats, I think the studio is going to release it again in the future with the SE form, just to keep revenue from 4K happening. And this may be the way things will go for a while with big films - just re-releasing them.

The price of the players is also not coming down, still hundreds of dollars.

We'll see...
