Who do you think is the best American artist?
Not necessarily who was the most important , but who do you think was the most talented.

shareChuck Close is an inspiration. His work is astounding and his willingness to achieve and how he overcame all the obstacles in his life is just out of this world. He truly is one of the greats.
Another is Edward Hopper....Personally though I feel the Americans are quite behind Europe in art, but that is down to its age rather than the talent
The most talented? Without any doubt John Singer Sargent.
Call me Ishmael...
I love Sargent, but I love Whistler as well.

Well, Whistler is certainly up there too - a subtle and elegant painter - but I went for Sargent because (a) I have a thing for portraits, (b) Sargent is still appallingly underrated (whereas I don't think Whistler is) and (c) I recently went to a glorious Sargent exhibition here at the National Portrait Gallery.
That same exhibition opened this very day at the Metropolitan (with even more paintings on show than we had in London, a minor detail I will try not to feel bitter about). You really mustn't miss it... it's an absolute stunner.

I am certainly going. Sargent is perhaps less underrated here in his country than elsewhere. Of course modernists and communists were hardly interested in him for a long time; but his paintings are too beautiful to be ignored, in any age.

That didn't stop us in literature.
No, the reason is that Anglophones can't paint.

Um, yes it does lol. Only place greater than Europe for literature is Russia. America is way, way behind.
I love it when American's get so uppity about not being "the best" at something.....There's a reason why Florence is bombarded by Yanks...Just saying.
Also, I am not sure you mean Anglophone.
I love it when
No you don't.
A glance at your posting history suggests you're British. So, still in denial about how we've been producing better writers than you for the last two hundred years?
Also, I am not sure you mean Anglophone.
Why would you be unsure? Are you also in denial about the fact that you can't paint?
