The BEST mac n cheese recipe?

Hello again, folks. I'm currently in search of the BEST mac n cheese recipe. This has probably been posted here a million times, now that I think of it, haha!

I've had the good ol' Kraft throughout the years and have already tried 2 different recipes from online (one from All Recipes, the other from the NY Times) and even though they were highly recommended, they were not good enough for me, lol!

I figured with all us foodies here I could find a real, tried and true recipe for a batch. Would some of y'all be willing to help me with my dilemma? I'm looking for one that's super cheesy, flavorful, not too fatty (although I'm not too afraid to lay on the butter), not too dry, and has that true homemade taste.

I'll check back in several hours. Maybe when all's said and done I can perhaps combine ideas from everyone's input.

I totally appreciate it! Thanks! 

I've used the recipe from the old Betty Crocker cookbook for years, but this one is really good too. It's definitely not low-cal. 

I now use vegan cheeses but grew up on a boiled and baked dairy recipe that many enjoy.

Boil your noodles
Remove noodles from heat and strain but don't rinse
Stir in a little milk, butter, and a soft cheese
Alternate layers of the noodles and a few slices of different cheeses
Bake until somewhat browned
Let set a few minutes
Then serve

Mmmm, sounds pretty good! I'm not so sure about the egg part though, when I try it I just might omit it. Thanks! 

I don't think it works without the egg. You don't taste it though, it just makes the texture right.

I really wanna try vegan cheese one of these days. A friend of mine had vegan pizzas one and I didn't try one... I regret that now, lol. Does it taste pretty close to dairy cheese? Probably not as rich, perhaps?

Your recipe sounds fast and easy. Every one I've found, so far, took many different ingredients and minutes. Maybe simpler the better might just work for the flavor I'm looking for.  Thanks! 

It, like dairy cheese, depends on the brand, type, and quality. Sample them whenever you have the chance and then you'll discover which ones you like and which ones you don't. You may like the ones I don't so read a few reviews online based on your usual taste.
