According to The Telegraph, this plan is one of several that Trump is considering ahead of the election. Three members of Trump’s team told the publication that this plan version involves freezing the current front line, with Ukraine agreeing to postpone its ambitions to join NATO for 20 years.
In exchange, the US would provide Ukraine with weapons to deter Russia from renewing hostilities. However, the US would not supply troops to patrol or secure the buffer zone or finance such a mission.
"We are not sending American men and women to uphold peace in Ukraine. And we are not paying for it. Get the Poles, Germans, British and French to do it," a member of Trump’s team said.
The plan, published by The Telegraph, suggests that Trump might call for European and British forces to establish an 800-mile (1,200 km) buffer zone between Russian and Ukrainian troops.
Trump’s peace plan
It is worth noting that this is at least the second version of Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine to appear in the media. Trump himself has never elaborated on the specifics of his plan.
The Wall Street Journal recently published another version of the plan, citing sources close to Trump. According to the report, one option involves Ukraine pledging not to join NATO for at least 20 years, with the US continuing to supply arms in return.
Additionally, this plan allegedly includes a provision to allow Russia to retain control over roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, commenting on Trump’s possible plan, warned that a quick end to the war could mean significant losses for Ukraine.
Bad deal imo. The only viable one I see is giving them Donbass or just those two separatist regions, no NATO for 15 years, and a buffer zone. Russia complained about that area because of Russian residing there but instead of just taking that area, he took way way more therefore showing he actually wants to take Ukraine. And we should be allowed to arm Ukraine to the teeth since Russia loves breaking treaties/armistices/memorandums/pacs when it suits them.
