I doubt it, although claiming he is sick is a way he'd be able to let his campaign money go to another candidate otherwise from what I have read it all gets returned. Quitting would be to admit his policies failed and the other dems would be running on the same policies, plus it's embarrassing and basically shows trump beat him again without even having an election this time.

I was thinking, when it all was going down, that they should have an 'open' convention (as did others, some of them powerful folks) but, in retrospect, that never would have worked. Not nearly enough time, way too much un-forced chaos & drama. Harris surprised a lot of people and is surprising a lot of people since, which is fortunate for those inclined to support her, but the logistics of a mini-primary would have been completely impractical.
Just to illustrate how what we may be thinking in the present, when viewed retrospectively, seems way off. Of course, if she'd botched the hand-over, that would put a different light on it.
1. An open convention is what the system called for, I believe. It could have been done. It would have been messy and not worked as well for the dems.
2. Fair point about the difficulty of "thinking in the present".
3. The thing that made the "hand over" smooth, was the media refusing to ask any questions about how undemocratic it was. Harris was "appointed" to this role, not elected.
