we all whine and huff about everything, yet the government provides many things we use, and makes decisions we may not like for the greater good.

Only solution is to give more power at local levels (less authority from central government). See Switzerland for example.
No central government means no big spending, no highways, no army, no defense, any bigger country can invade you.
your last line is the big picture problem. maybe if all the earth got along.... yet turns out ONLY the governments want to war... the people rarely do.

I have friends that complain about government, not needing it, and I'm lik, "really?? Do you have electricity? Running water? Ever driven on any road ever? In a car that passed a bajillion safety requirments to keep you alive?" they seem to have zero clue how well their world has been crafted by a governing group.

shareNot only do we need a government, but if we magically made the government disappear, a new government would immediately take its place. I believe governments are an emergent property of societies. If you get enough people together and try organizing to accomplish something, a structure will form and that will be the birth of a new government.

shareGovernment is what happens when any number of people decides to live together as a group, a community. You can't have people in the group literally doing anything they want, so there have to be rules. There have to be consequences for breaking rules, there have to be people who decide whether someone actually broke the rules or not, etc. The only way to not need government is for people to decide for themselves that they're going to be good and upstanding and never ever fuck over any of their neighbors, ever, period. Good luck with that.
