The Etymology of the Word 'Woke'

Does anyone know the context in which the term 'woke' was first used?

It was used in a protest song 'Scottsboro Boys' by a Blues musician, Lead Belly, in reference to the FALSE ALLEGATION of rape made against 9 young Black men in 1931.

I find this fascinating, in view of the context in which the term 'woke' is often used these days...

reply

Evidently the New York Times used it as a social/political term in 1962.

reply

The lefties call themselves that.

It's only recently gone mainstream.

At the risk of being accused of being facetious, the term's origin raises an interesting question.

Is #MeToo 'woke' if, say, it concerns a potentially doubtful allegation against a man of colour?

reply

what do you mean?

reply

The term 'woke' originally applied to a case involving the *false* allegation of rape against a group of young/teenage Black men.

reply

MeToo is woke is that if you don't openly worship the woke cult, then it doesn't count. They deserved it in some way. Everything is justified because the ideology says so.
