Republicans Prove They're Inept with Failure to Appoint a Speaker

"The House Republican "leadership" standoff is in a second day Wednesday after three failed votes to decide on a speaker Tuesday.

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is so far being stymied by a small group of hardliners demanding concessions or alternative candidates.

The House can conduct no other business -- and members can't be sworn in -- until a speaker is chosen."

Republicans don't care about the American people.

Ironic coming from the party that believes if elections aren't decided in a single day, they can't be trusted.

reply

at least crazy eyes drunk nancy is gone.

reply

No she isn't gone.

reply

Congress should vote for Pelosi as Speaker! At least we know she can lead unlike the inept Republicans who can't even find a competent Speaker among their own party.

reply

Your idiocy is staggering!

reply

I did not know that the Speaker of the House does not have to be a Member of the House.

Why WOULDN'T the GOP (or the Democrats for that matter) elect someone else to be Speaker? That's an extra vote, isn't it?

Voting

Under the early rules of the House, the Speaker was barred from
voting except under certain circumstances. 5 Hinds Sec. 5964. Today,
the Speaker has the same right as other Members to vote but only
occasionally exercises it. Manual Sec. 631. The Speaker may vote on
any matter that comes before the House, and he is required to vote
where his vote would be decisive or where the House is engaged in
voting by ballot.

Speaker Trump?

reply

WTF is this all about:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speaker_of_the_United_States_House_of_Representatives#cite_note-44

"The speaker's powers and duties extend beyond presiding in the chamber. In particular, the speaker has great influence over the committee process. The speaker selects nine of the thirteen members of the powerful Committee on Rules, subject to the approval of the entire majority party. The leadership of the minority party chooses the remaining four members."

I thought all committees, House and Senate, more or less reflect the proportion of the members. With a razor-thin GOP majority I would expect 7-6, or maybe even 13-12 they increase members of that committee.

Also

Furthermore, the speaker appoints all members of select committees and conference committees. I don't know what a select committee does, but I'm guessing a conference committee is House members hashing out a compromise with Senators when the two chambers have bills that need to be reconciled. That sounds like a big deal - did Pelosi only appoint Democrats to the conference committee in the last Congress?

You’re so right, it would be a true delight to watch Trump fail to be elected! 🤣

“These fing people,” Rep.

Here's one promise already broken!!

Kevin McCarthy: "On the very first day of the new Republican-led Congress, we will read every single word of the Constitution aloud from the floor of the House—something that hasn't been done in years."
