US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has been ordered to pay $49.3m (£41m) in damages after falsely claiming a 2012 school shooting was a hoax.

A jury in Texas ruled the radio host must pay $45.2m in punitive damages, in addition to $4.1m in compensatory damages they awarded a day earlier.

The two-week defamation trial was brought by the parents of a child killed in the attack.

Twenty children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook in Connecticut.

Does this mean no more InfoWars? They're dropping like flies now. I remember watching Jones back in the 9/11 days with his conspiracy spook stuff. At least he goes well with Doom.

His infowars budget has ballooned since the 9/11 days, you can see that in his sets. He'll have to let go of a lot of people and go back to the old days if he wants to keep this alive.

I think these verdicts are extremely over the top though. How many times has he said insane things and nothing like this has ever happened before, you know, because of free speech. Emotional trauma is from Jones is total BS, especially if you are a family member of this mass shooting.

No it isn’t. Jones’s reckless actions led to the harassment of these families for a long time.

If anything, it is a shame punitive damages are capped. He should be paying more.

His comentaries created the effect of these lunatics harrassing the family.

That’s the allegation that was proven in Court and why he has to pay.

When I said: “Yes it is”, I was saying that it is his fault the wackos harrassed these families.

So, the answer is no, and he has to pay 50 million dollars for doing what he's been doing for decades.

In my opinion, and at the end of the day a case like this is all opinion, these lawsuits are a joke. Had he actually went after them personally, that be different. For crying out loud the people he's go after personally have never sued him like this.

He did go after them personally! Just because he didn't personally go up to their homes with a megaphone, doesn't mean his constant peddling of falsehoods weren't the root cause of the death threats and harassment these people faced. His attacks were directed at these people's character and reputations, hence the defamation win.

But did he? Did he called out specific people, and even if he did, he has done this for decades as I've said. 9/11 being what he is most known for. He wasn't sued to death for that though. I'm sure there are many more examples.

No clue if he called them out individually by name, but he definitely has called the Sandy hook parents(and kids for some reason) crisis actors and liars hundreds of times. No reasonable person could stand in court and claim that it wasn't crystal clear who Jones was speaking about.

Freedom of Speech is not unlimited.

The classic example is that you can’t yell “fire!” in a crowded theater.

If your speech is false and you cause damage to people, you can get sued and lose money.

Read the legal definition of Defamation. What Jones has been doing for years clearly covers all four required elements.

1) a false statement purporting to be fact;
2) publication or communication of that statement to a third person;
3) fault amounting to at least negligence;
4) damages, or some harm caused to the reputation of the person or entity who is the subject of the statement.
