Canada faces a tough choice this weekend between angering Germany and offending Ukraine as it ponders the fate of a large turbine that has been undergoing repairs in the workshops of Siemens Energy Canada.

The turbine normally drives gas through the Nord Stream One pipeline that runs from Russia to Germany. Last month, while undergoing scheduled maintenance at a Siemens Energy facility in Montreal, the turbine was caught up in sanctions the Trudeau government brought against its owner, Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom.

Russia responded by cutting the flow of gas through the pipeline by 60 per cent. It has said since that unless the turbine is returned by Monday, July 11, it will not restore normal flow.

That poses a serious problem for the German government, which is struggling to fill the nation's storage tanks to get through the coming winter. Some other European countries, such as Italy, face similar problems.

On Friday, Germany began rationing hot water, dimming street lights and closing swimming pools as it faces the prospect of energy shortages that could leave its people shivering and its businesses shuttered this winter.

Robert Habeck, Germany's finance minister and deputy chancellor, has acknowledged that his country made a "grievous mistake" when it allowed itself to become so dependent on Russian energy. But Habeck said Berlin now has no choice but to ask Canada to override its sanctions and return the turbine.

Oh fuck off. Trump warned about this 4 years ago and they still sucked the dick of Putin. This is like Climate Change in reverse where instead the people will suffer instead of the climate but I guess that's okay with them.

Forcing Canada to choose because they acted like children and ignored the parent (US). US didn't want to be the parent but Germany decide to be the spoiled brat child and now wants the turbine back. Will Germany act like a child again if Canada says no? Will Germany throw a fit and switch sides because they can't take responsibility of their own making? Or will it grow a pair and act like an adult, to accept responsibility that in the future when one warns them again of such a future event similar to this, it will not occur again.

You clearly don't know your history. Germany has been dependent on oil and other resources which they bought from Russia (well, former Soviet Union) for like 5 decades (that's FIFTY YEARS) now. Yes, even though the USSR was basically occupying half of Germany. LMFAO. Bu-, bu- muh Trump warned about this 4 years ago!!

Hell, when the Germans realized the extent of Soviet economic aid before Operation Barbarossa ("Feeding the German Eagle: Soviet Economic Aid to Nazi Germany", Edward Ericson) they decided to invade USSR for its resources.

(Germany was always seen as small and lacking in resources by Germans; they wanted to colonize other lands and be the predominant financial power in Europe, they also loathed that London was the financial capital of the world and not Berlin and they hated British hegemony before WWI and WWII. Also, prior to WWII, Germany was on the brink of financial collapse - despite their corporations having four (4) times as many profits when compared to the year 1938 - which is why they went ahead and invaded and looted half of Europe).

Europe has never had significant oil. They did have plenty of coal which fueled the industrial revolution in UK and Germany.
Germany had plenty of resources in their colonies, which they lost after WW1. Hitler simply wanted to rebuilt that empire.

There was a debate between proponents of "small" and "big" Germany in the 19th century. The idea of "big" Germany prevailed. The result? The first genocide of the 20th century (Herero & Namaqua genocide in Africa) and the only genocide accomplished using military-industrial means in the history of the world.

Ironically, Germany probably would've had more territory today if the proponents of the first idea had prevailed.

Let's see what Hitler wanted:

On the contrary, our task is to undertake an immense organization of the whole world in which each land shall produce what it requires most and in which the white race -- the Nordic race -- shall take the leading part in administering and carrying out this vast plan. Believe me, National Socialism would not be worth anything if it were to be confined to Germany and did not secure the rule of the superior race over the whole world for at least one or two thousand years.

"Hitler simply wanted to rebuilt that empire."

I think "Third Reich" means something like "Third Time" in that Rome of the Caesars was the first and The Holy Roman Empire of Charlemagne was the second. Hitler wanted what Charlemagne had, plus a little extra....

I know of German history, I am not speaking of the past but the present and their inability to change and adapt to changing times. The fact they're now forced to do so shows how lazy they are. They dragged it on for so long that it's now harming relations with other allied nations. This was an obvious outcome to any nation still doing business with pretend ex-commies. That goes double for China.
