Putin could be getting exactly what he feared most

For years, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has viewed the expansion of NATO as an existential threat that would leave Russia hemmed in with Western missiles on its doorstep. Now, Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine seems to be bringing the Russian leader’s nightmare to life, with NATO on the brink of starting its largest potential expansion in nearly two decades.

After navigating the postwar era in nonalignment and neutrality, Sweden and Finland are now actively exploring ascension to the military alliance forged in the Cold War, with officials from both countries set to meet with their NATO counterparts Saturday.

His invasion of Ukraine was stupid from the start and his assumption Ukraine would just roll over quickly has been proven wrong. Ukraine was never going to invade or threaten anyone let alone Russia.

Putin is the classic bully. He thinks he can hit people and when they hit back it's a case of "You made me bleed my own blood, how dare you!"

Of course Sweden and Finland will join NATO and even Switzerland have been pondering their neutrality. Russia is so drained from the Ukraine invasion that they won't be invading anyone again for a long time. Ukraine once this is all done will also build up a huge military and probably get nukes.
