Another 'extremely worrisome' climate change record set

The world set a new record this week for the highest daily level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, another grim marker signaling that the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change continue are continuing at a dangerous pace.

On May 11, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, measured 421.37 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere, besting the previous record of 418.95 ppm set in May 2021.

The new daily record comes after April recorded the a new average monthly record of 410 ppm of atmospheric CO2 for the first time in recorded history.

"It is very concerning, extremely worrisome," Peter Tans, senior climate scientist at NOAA, told the Financial Times. "This last decade, the rate of increase has never been higher, and we are still on the same path. We're going in the wrong direction at maximum speed."

Climate change is a hoax, right?

Not bad enough as there doesn't seem to be widespread rioting and looting in the streets like we seen when there's a real emergency - or maybe just not enough people believe it yet?

reply

meanwhile California is on fire again and Russia is destroying an entire ecosystem, but good luck with reversing climate change.

the only positive of climate change is that someday a million years from now, we will descend into another ice age.

oh and dont forget all the electric cars that are recharged by coal or natural gas, this will save the Earth in 2.5 years.

Anyone that disregards nuclear is a shill.

reply

nothing wrong with nuclear until something goes wrong and we still havent found a way to reuse the waste. we used to dump nuclear waste in the ocean. as they say, out of sight, out of mind...

reply

Have you heard of Thorium based mini-reactors?

reply

yeah, I heard about them on the news a while back when they were talking about the new nuke plant in Georgia.

seems intriguing and doable.

dont know much about Thorium though.

reply

The climate is always changing, we're also coming out of an ice age so of course the planet is going to be warming up.

Regardless if anthropomorphic climate change is real, there's no way to stop it. To even have a shred of hope of even slowing down, the very first thing that would need to be done is shut down all the polluting structures in China and India. Anything less is basically doing nothing.

reply

we might have to go many steps further and shut down everything and go back to pre-industrialization. people would have to give up their cushy life style and 5G, but as of now, peoples heads would explode if they couldnt check tik tok every minute.

if they couldnt check tik tok every minute

haha so true!

JoWilli fun fact:

I work in the telecom industry and most people dont realize the vast amounts of fiber, equipment, data centers and cell towers in the US and the World. the data centers and equipment consume a massive amount of electricity. companies are still building new data centers just to keep up with the demands of internet usage and 5G. we are installing 100G circuits all the time just to keep up. people love their internet but seem oblivious as to the impact of providing it.

The faster humans go extinct, the better everyone off will be. If they really wanted to tackle climate change they'd introduce population limits but nope, gotta change peoples lifestyle or how things are made instead while still shitting out more humans to consume and exhale CO2. As long as you still have the contributing factor aka Humans, Climate Change will never be addressed, just bandaid patch on a non-clotting wound.

reply

The faster humans go extinct

Get us started then. Lead by example.

A record?......Really.

During the Cretaceous period for example C02 levels were at 2000ppm and temperatures were 5 to 10 degrees warmer than today.

So how is it a new record when it is 1600ppm lower than previous.

More sensationalism. we are coming out of an Ice Age so temperatures are obvioulsy going to get warmer.

reply

bro, I have said the same thing for years, climate changers dont care about facts. they will blame every weather anomaly on climate change. luckily, global warming was solved years ago by Al Gore.
