Why do Republicans hold most of the State Legislatures?

How did they get this kind of power? I can see why so many states can move to ban abortion and how they're able to pass such laws. Even though Dems have more population, they lose to state legislature elections. I am guessing it's because they've concentrated themselves in mostly urban areas thereby screwing themselves. If that's the case, I feel they would be fine then even if RvW is overturned since they'll have most of the people there still able to do abortions.

Gerrymandering.

reply

They gerrymandered the hell out of Wisconsin, I know that. They've got most of the Dem voters packed into a few districts. They are drawn like jigsaw puzzle pieces. It's ridiculous.

reply

Is it the winning party that draws the lines or what? Who determines what to redistrict? I know that the Dems also gerrymander when possible. Does that mean the GOP are just better at it or more people favor them because they're not tightly packed and spread out for more point gain?

reply

The Republicans controlled the legislature here so I think they got to draw the new district lines. There are rules against obvious gerrymandering but they also control the state supreme court, so not much could be done.

reply

Gerrymandering. And voter suppression.

reply

I just realized, if RvW is reversed, it goes back to the states and state legislators make those sort of rules. That means the images you see above is where abortion would be banned which is pretty much 85%+ of the US more or less area wise minus the concentrated states where the Dems reside in with those blue pockets.

reply

The winning party always drew the lines historically, it's only when the Dems in GOP states realize they can't win over people with ideas that they want to redraw the lines without being the winning party.

reply

And you don't see a problem with the winning party drawing the lines? That should bother you regardless of which party is weilding the pen.

reply

Again, it's not a problem for when Democrats do it.

It's blatant disenfranchising of the voters. That's not okay for any party.

reply

It depends. You're not going to draw a bunch of urban areas into suburban and rural areas to cancel their vote.

reply

except its objectively the republicans doing it more and worse.

reply

If it was democrat majority that would be perfectly fine, right?

reply

Of course! That's (D)ifferent!

reply

Nope, I would be questioning why in the very same reason.
