Mexico sues US gun manufacturers over arms trafficking toll

"The Mexican government sued United States gun manufacturers and distributors Wednesday in U.S. federal court, arguing that their negligent and illegal commercial practices have unleashed tremendous bloodshed in Mexico.

Among those being sued are some of the biggest names in guns, including: Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc.; Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc.; Beretta U.S.A. Corp.; Colt’s Manufacturing Company LLC, and Glock Inc. Another defendant is Interstate Arms, a Boston-area wholesaler that sells guns from all but one of the named manufacturers to dealers around the U.S.

The government estimates that 70% of the weapons trafficked to Mexico come from the U.S., according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry. And that in 2019 alone, at least 17,000 homicides were linked to trafficked weapons.

Steve Shadowen, the lead attorney representing Mexico, said that in the early 2000s about 30 U.S. cities brought similar litigation against gun manufacturers arguing that they should be responsible for increased police, hospitalization and other costs associated with gun violence.

As some cities started winning, gun manufacturers went to Congress and got an immunity statute for the manufacturers. Shadowen said he believes that immunity doesn’t apply when the injury occurs outside the United States.

It cited a decision in California allowing a lawsuit against Smith & Wesson to move forward, a lawsuit filed last week against Century Arms related to a 2019 shooting in Gilroy, California, and the $33 million settlement reached by Remington with some of the families whose children were killed in the Newtown, Connecticut, mass school shooting."

Canada needs to sue, too!

reply

Oh good. I guess America can sue Mexico for all the murders and drug convictions committed in the U.S. by illegals AND legal Mexican citizens.

reply

Crusty would never sue them.

reply

California, Texas, New Mexico, and a few other states were Mexico. Just give those states back to them. Problem solved!

reply

The people who lived in those states chose to become Americans and join the U.S., ya tard. Just like every Mexican makes that choice. Problem is, we dont want them. Although I'd be fine the U.S. selling California to Mexico in exchange for them building a Korea style Demilitarized zone at the border, and not allowing ANY Californians/Mexicans past it.

reply

No, they didn't choose. The U.S. took those states. The indigenous people have been living there for thousands of years and the Spaniards and Africans for centuries.

YOU don't want them. I prefer them to you any day of the week. All you do is whine on this site. They work hard.

reply

Mexico should also work on their cartel problems.

reply

The U.S. needs to work on their illegal drug use problem which is fueling Mexico's cartel problem.

reply

True. It is a vicious cycle.

reply

Maybe they should build some sort of wall or fence and enforce it, just my thoughts.

reply

Trump built the wall and Mexico paid for it. Remember?
