Back then there were gatekeepers in traditional media that acted as a filter for what was considered acceptable and what wasn't. This had its benefits as well as its downsides. One benefit is like what you describe. Morton Downey Jr could platform extremists while also acting as a filter by rightfully ridiculing them and putting them in their place while broadcasting their voice through the prism of his show.
With the internet and social media that traditional filter is now gone. The anonymity of the internet has given otherwise latent extremists a voice and social media a means for them to organize and find like minded voices that was absent in the 1980s. The old paradigm of free speech absolutism that you're espousing needs to be rethought because the parameters have changed.
