Americans! Please try to explain the voting for me.

Sorry if I sound idiotic. I've tried to research this but I still haven't found an answer.

If the president is decided by the electoral college, then what is the point of the general public voting too ?

I know it's called The Popular Vote, but does this actually count for anything? And if not, then what's the point?

Please educate me if I have this wrong as I am genuinely confused, but say if every citizen of a state voted Green but the electoral college voted Yellow then Yellow would win even though this is only a handful of people? ( Yes I know they are the wrong colours!).

It's very simple... raw political power. As long as the current system benefits one party over the other at least one of the two parties will not change it as long as they think it is in the interest to retain the Electoral College. As to your other question: what's the point of the Electoral College? I think it's a flaw of the system that some sort of electoral reward is given to the party with the most votes - even if the Presidency was still decided by the Electoral College. We don't really have any way the of composition of the government can reflect this. This is why third parties have never really taken root long term. For instance, in 1992 Ross Perot "won" 18% of the popular vote - he actually won 18 percent of nothing and carried not a single state. His Reform Party did run again in 1996 and did less well... then disappeared.

The electoral votes are supposed to reflect how the state voted...ie if, in PA, Trump got more votes than Biden, then all the PA electoral votes...I think it's 20, go for Trump and none for Biden. So the national popular vote isn't all that meaningful for who wins the presidential election....other than a talking point.

The electoral votes are determined by which candidate the general public votes for in that state, is the answer.

πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ thank you! I can't believe how hard it is to find answers to this!! I always thought they were independent people casting their own vote and theirs was the one that counted and not the general public.

"Popular vote" really doesn't mean anything, correct?
