Which anime film has a bigger chance at the Oscars?
Miss Hokusai or Your Name?
shareFor a nomination? Your Name assuming it's being submitted. For a win? Neither, you know very well that the Academy has no animation respect so just drop the subject already.
"If life is getting you down and needs uplifting, then please come dance with me!"
It could win best foreign film or best animation.
shareOff the top of my head, Waltz with Bashir was the only animated film to be nominated for Best Foreign Film and it didn't win. If any others were nominated since then, I'm not aware but I'm sure they didn't win either. As for Best Animated Feature, sure they can be nominated as long as they are submitted but they won't win. Pretty much only Disney or Pixar will win the award. There have been exceptions in the past, but at this point it's unlikely that either will have those kinds of off years again. Even so, the Academy voters still wouldn't go for the foreign pick first as, like I said, they have no animation respect.

Spirited Away won. I don't think they don't respect the art form, the films simply have to be submitted.
And they are "foreign films" that receive there own equivalent of an Oscar award in there own country.

Oh of course my whole argument has been countered because you brought up that one exception to the rule. Yes, that one exception that was nominated during Disney's down years and during a year where there was no Pixar film. Seriously though, foreign animated films are submitted and nominated every year, great ones, and they still lose to Disney and Pixar no matter what. And if you don't believe the Academy is disrespectful to animation, look it up, there are a ton of videos and articles out there covering the subject.

Yes, each country has it's own awards show but that's irrelevant to this conversation.

Can YOU name these films and honestly say they were better than the American films that were made?
Hayao Miyazaki has been nominated three times and has a win and last year received an honorary award.
Yoshiaki Nishimura nominated twice.
Another variable to consider:
The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was first given out at the 74th Academy Awards, held on March 24, 2002. The Academy included a rule that stated that the award would not be presented in a year in which fewer than eight eligible films opened in theaters.

It's not "irrelevant" seeing as those very films are the ones that are summited for consideration for the Oscars.

Of course I can. Before that though, let me just start by saying that I'm not saying a foreign or independent film should win every year, that would cause the opposite problem. Now below I'll list foreign nominations below that could have been justifiable winners. I'm not saying all of these should have won, we all have our personal taste, but only that these films could have won and had no chance to.
2003- The Triplets of Belleville
2005- Howls Moving Castle (yes, technically a British film won this year, but once again, there was no Pixar film and Disney had Chicken Little)
2007- Persepolis
2009- The Secret of Kells
2010- The Illusionist
2011- Chico and Rita
2013- Ernest and Celestine, The Wind Rises
2014- Song of the Sea, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
2015- When Marnie Was There, Boy and the World
Now once again, I'm not saying all of the above should have won, though there's certainly a few years where I would definitely say the foreign output was better than our Oscar winner. That also rings true for some other domestic films I didn't mention. Now besides the actual nominees I'm sire there are other films that were submitted but didn't make the cut. Interestingly, the number of foreign nominees has been increasing in the past decade. As nice as that is, what's the point if everyone knows they'll never win? The Academy voters have been on record saying they don't watch all the films and often let their kids pick the winner. One voter in particular is on record calling an Irish/French film and a Japanese film Chinese garbage. I'm probably putting more effort into this than I should as even most of the die hard Pixar and Disney fans around here know the Academy has no animation respect. Lastly, before I forget, there are also plenty of animated films out there that don't get anywhere near the Academy and are often better than their chosen winner. Once again, I don't hate mainstream animation in any way, but it's naive to think the playing field is fair when it comes to the big awards shows.
"If life is getting you down and needs uplifting, then please come dance with me!"
Maybe I'm too optimistic but I think what's going to happen with the Best Animated Feature category is the same as with Best Animated Short. At first, only mainstream studios (Disney, Warner Bros, MGM, etc.) won; now it's mostly independent and foreign shorts as the winners (this year a Chilean short beat Pixar's submission).
