If you could choose one character not to die, regardless of plot, who would you save?
I would save Sirius Black. I loved his character so much and felt so bad for Harry losing him.

Sirius was always a doomed character, IMO. I'd save either Dobby or Hedwig.

Yeah, Fred was a hard one to lose but he was of age and a full fledged member of The Order, so I think that at least gives his death the elevated status of dying a hero.
My second choice would be Cedric for exactly your reasons for Fred.

Lupin, or Tonks. Fred's death was heart-breaking too, but he did at least not have a new-born son.
Intelligence and purity.
Pandora Lovegood, her death was an accident and Luna is too sweet to be left alone. At least she'd have her family growing up. Although I'd deprive her of her ability to see Nargles.
I'd do the same thing for Harry and George... I'd bring back Fred and Sirius for the same reason....
