Wichita Lineman

Pick your poison

Favorites, I like the original, but the Sammy Davis version linked below is good, and of course Johnny Cash makes it his own in a way that none of the others could. Least favorites, Tom Jones is trying way too hard to ham it up, and Stipe isn't really doing anything at all with it, mostly just phoning in a copy of what Campbell was doing.

The original.

Let's never speak of Sammy Davis Jr's version again.

"Worthington, we're being attacked by giant bats!"

reply

You kidding me? The band is sharp on the Sammy version and he delivers a good performance as well.

Completely wrong vibe for the lyrics - total misreading. See Joan Baez "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."

"Worthington, we're being attacked by giant bats!"

reply

I disagree. I think the two opposite vibes can exist together, not unlike how electrons can be simultaneously viewed as particles and waves.

Glens was the best voice. So Glen wins.

Beautiful song. I'll go with the original performer Glenn Campbell.

The REM version is the best of the other covers, IMO.
