Can I reference this?
I have a situation where two characters connect over their love for Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Can I reference these pieces of work or do copyright issues come into play?

What has fan fiction got to do with anything? The film is set in a British pub. All sorts of conversations come up over a pint of beer. The male and female characters where going to argue over which franchise was better; Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. So, they argue over their differences in taste but at the same time establish they have a shared interest.
