Movie discussion group. Let's discuss!

Hey y'all,

The movie discussion group has finally been floated. The purpose of this group is to share our thoughts on films that we all love. We will take one film at a time and pose discussion questions to each other so we can recalls our views and opinions on these movies.

Before we get started, I have a few questions on form and content of this group that I would like your opinions on.

1. What name would you suggest for this group. We could simply term this "Movie disussion group" or "Movie discussion club" but I am open to having a snazzier title. Please do share whatever ideas you may have to name this group.

2. How would we choose movies? Are you open to watching new movies (in which case we might have to opt for Amazon instant video or DVDs) or do we only want to choose movies that we have all watched, OR a mix of both? If the former, we can all propose names of movies that others may not have watched and we can choose one that we all want to watch and discuss. If the latter, we can give extended lists of movies we have watched and want to discuss, and I couple the movie/s that belongs to all (or almost all lists). I am also open to open ways in which we could choose movies?

3. What exactly will we discuss about these movies? The most practical option I have in mind is that one person will serve as the "curator" for each movie and pose a set of discussion questions on the board of the movie. These could include questions about the movie's theme, technical aspects (music/cinematography, etc.) or any other interesting questions about the movie (for e.g. which performance did you like most in the movie). Obviously we will respond to each other's posts, and could even pose other questions in the thread on an informal basis. Alternately, we could all post discussion questions in that thread and answer questions posed by each other. I am a bit reluctant to have a non-formal structure where in we just open a thread and share whatever opinions we have about the movie, but I am open to discussion about that.

4. About future membership about this club: Obviously, we have been selective in our invitations to begin with. How would we go forward with increasing our membership? Should any member have the freedom to invite whoever they want to this group, or should someone take a decision on this? Obviously, me or MoviemanCin have just started this group and will have no special rights in it. Also, if someone notices this thread, and wants to contribute in that thread or join that group right away would that be ok?

Do share your opinions guys! I hope this will be fun!

You should put this General Discussion for now and welcome in almost anyone who isn't a troll. If you haven't noticed this community only has about a dozen regular non troll posters and needs as many people as it can get. Once you have a decent amount of conversation and members, you can become more exclusive and move it to a more private location. The advantage to having more people is that if some of those who you selected are inactive, at least there will be a few others who will keep the conversation going. Just my two cents.

Hello there!

This post is just a notification to let you know that the first movie for our movie discussion group "At the Movies" has been chosen. It is the movie "M" (1931) by Fritz Lang for which Allaby is the curator. To watch the movie search for "M 1931" on youtube or click on this link. The discussion questions for the movie have already been posted, and the discussion has begun. To access the discussion thread for this movie, go the Video forum under "Film Talk" and find the thread "At The Movies (ATM): M (1931)" or click on this link to be directly taken to it.

What do you think about "survivor" 2015 with milla jovovich?

My suggestions for names:
Chatting about films
Dissecting Cinema
Film Buffs Discussion group
Talking about cinema
Silver screen discussions
Discussing the movies

I think we should watch movies we haven't seen before as well as ones we have. I would suggest watching lesser known films, foreign films and classics. We can watch films that are on YouTube or Netflix, if everyone has access to those.

I like the idea of people posing questions for everyone to answer.

I think anyone who wants to join and isn't a troll or bully should be allowed.

It sounds like fun.

Hi! Nice to meet you!
That is an excellent idea. That is about the only access I have when it comes to some of the ones I haven't seen.

The cool thing about this group is that we may just find some films that we have never watched and come away with something new and wonderful.

I honestly don't mind what the name of this group is. Anything that is decided is fine by me.
I do enjoy discussing older films..... 30's through the 90's.....
I would love to contribute my views in any way. This is a great way to get to know one another on this site and to gain more insight about the movies we all enjoy.
I confess that I may not always be available. I work and sometimes I'm not always here but I want to help in any way I can. Please don't make this an assignment though. I have belonged to two book clubs in the past. I have a love of reading. The first club was great. The second one didn't work out so well for me. I think it had to do with the fact that reading the books became such a chore. I read for pleasure..... not assignments. It's the same with films.

I enjoy many genres..... Horror, comedy, drama.... Perhaps we could discuss light hearted films in the summer... Horror in the fall around Halloween time.... Holiday films during Thanksgiving through New Years??? Everything in between? Just a suggestion.
I look forward to contributing to discussions and questions and I hope that this group will be a success.
One more thing..... I enjoy a good debate as long as things are kept civil. No name calling and no personal insults. We can disagree without being nasty.
That's just my two cents. I hope this idea FLYS!

Are there more people you invited to join? Just curious. I came back here to see if others had more ideas.

Hello!

I was told about this group! I was going to wait and see how it played out, to be honest, but I figured some more activity to help it start wasn't a bad thing.

The only name that I thought of off the top of my head was maybe something like, The Film Forum? Ya know, for the alliteration fans šŸ˜‹, but really whatever is fine with me, punchy or not. I think it could be cool to do a mix of movies we've see and movies we haven't. Maybe start off with the ones we love the most or are familiar with the most just to make the discussions start out easier or to feel our way into what kind of group it will be.

The questions thing is a good idea. A film class I took once did that thing. It was one persons job to be the curator of discussion by throwing out a couple questions to get it going. I don't know if we need to put the weight on just one person, maybe we have a rule where we open up only a certain number of threads on a board. Enough to jolt the board awake, but nothing overwhelming. Or, once we know which parts of films (or shows, I suggest we include those as well) we each gravitate towards the most we can be like, "okay, you do a thread about the design, this one person does one about the performances, or this person does one about the directing," and so on and so forth...unless that feels too restrictive.

Really, I'm cool with whatever people want to make threads about as long as it's thoughtful and constructive. We should just let people be passionate about what they're passionate about as long as it's civil! For future membership, I mean, as long as they aren't trolling it should be fine, why limit ourselves or be a clique, ya know? Maybe create a decree of decorum or something, lol. But that can be up to you two that started this, I wouldn't want there to be any drama or step on any toes here.

I guess, that's my entirely long 2 cents. This is a really neat idea and I hope it takes off. Good luck and good discussing!

Good ideas everyone. Glad you're all on board. Here are mine:

1. Name: I thought we could call it ATM (At The Movies), short, punchy, already a part of our common lexicon.

2. Which Movies to Discuss: I think we should leave this wide open.

3. What to discuss: Anything and everything.

4. Having a "Curator" for each movie is a good idea. The person who suggests the film would act as Curator, and
propose questions for discuss.

5. I don't think it's a good idea to put this in the General Discussion at this time. There are 17,538 posts in that section. We want to avoid trolls, and keep the group relatively small, at least at first, imho. I think one to one recruiting is best.

6. Has anyone heard from Kazak or Godeway? Moviefan225 said they might be interested.

7. I will contact MinaVladimir. She is an intelligent fan, and would make an excellent addition to our little group.

8. A round of applause and a box of Good N Plenty for Moviefan225 for coming up with the idea! Definitely thinking outside the box there.

It should be fun!

PS I just invited Beto, Popcorn Kernel and Keybored to join.

Thanks first.

Names? Filmwatch? Bring The Popcorn? Now Showing?

Open to discussing any films, any genre.

Like the idea that 1 person picks a film per week and the others get time to watch and discuss/dissect it.

Perhaps each member can invite 1 new member, to keep it manageable for now and see how that goes.

Hello, everyone!

Suggestions for the name:

Kino Krazies - Just because I could put Kino in there, and use a K where a C should be.

The Group ā€“ Only the members would really know what it refers to, and I think weā€™ll end up referring to it like that anyway.

Those are just for fun of course, Iā€™d be happy with whatever.

Open or closed group: I donā€™t know how we could stop anyone from stumbling upon this or any other thread we start, so on that end I guess anyone can join the discussion of the film itself. We canā€™t really stop them, and itā€™d be a bit rude (if they arenā€™t a troll). But we can have control on the film selection front. We could keep it as it is (invite only) and if someone expresses a desire to join there could be a ā€œtrialā€ or ā€œevaluationā€ period of sorts for full involvement. Does this make any sense? But I think we should be inclusive, and try not to fall into clique territory.

Choosing movies: Since international distribution is pretty uneven, maybe see if a film is available to most or all members, before we make a definite decision. Basically leave it to the individual member to see whatā€™s available to them. Someone mentioned Youtube. I think thatā€™s the place which is going to be available to everyone internationally. There are lots of older and non American ( since American movies are Foreign movies to me ;) ) movies there. Of course we should have the option to opt out of discussing a particular film. Maybe everyone (or whoever wants) can make one suggestion and we have a vote on which film we watch? And whomeverā€™s film is chosen is the curator of that particular discussion. Or it could be rotational, where members take turns suggesting movies (but again, we should check if the film is available to others).

I donā€™t have a particular preference for time period, location or genre. And this could really be a great way of finding films that you might not seek out on your own. We could have ā€œthemedā€ months, where we discuss things from a particular region or genre, or with similar themes. Not all the time, but peppered throughout the year.

Discussion: A curator would be nice. Setting a few discussion points to get the ball rolling. But Iā€™m not opposed a more free flowing discussion (as long as itā€™s kept on topic). Iā€™m not sure how many threads we should start on a particular board. Maybe start off with one more general thread, and if a particular element warrants a more in-depth discussion, move it to its own thread. As to movies weā€™ve watched vs. havenā€™t watched, I think thereā€™s going to be a mix anyway, since everyoneā€™s viewing history is different.

Sorry for being so long-winded :D

Iā€™ve never been in a group like this, but it looks like itā€™s going to be lots of fun.

Thanks for the reminder Moviefan. I saw the thread, I just wanted to watch the film first before I commented :)

And since I have your eye ;) just a suggestion. Maybe you could add the name of the group and the list of picking order to the OP, just so we don't have to scroll down so much to get to them.
