Here's an oxymoron for you:

In order to 'enhance the customer experience on IMDb',they're getting rid of the message boards, maybe the single greatest thing on IMDb.

How the hell is that supposed to enhance our customer experience???

I remember when I drove a Moon-Crane. Damn near rolled the thing into the Sea of Tranquility.

Great question.

maybe the single greatest thing on IMDb.(message boards)
No maybes about it. Message boards are the best thing about IMDB. Why they are getting rid of them is anyone's guess.

It says right in the notice. Negativity based on data and traffic. I am certain the sheer number of posts reported in the last few months has been enough of a reason. If it's not illegal download links, it's thread hijacking, racist/bigoted rants, celebrity death trolling, etc. It's simply a matter of people lacking civility and the ability to stay on-topic. Perhaps when people regain those skills in four years, IMDb will return the boards.

Let's see who takes the bait.

Respectfully, that seems implausible. The internet is rife with trolling and hatred, yet it still stands. I'd bet my life that this decision is financially motivated:
--- Maybe Amazon (parent co.) is losing money on DVD sales and streaming because of negative reviews here and because of posts/messages directing users to free sites for content. (I doubt that the above cost Amazon all that much, but it's possible.)
--- More likely: Amazon stands to gain $$$ from herding everyone to FB because FB collects so much purchase-related data on users.
--- Also likely: Amazon stands to gain $$$ in some way that we can't yet discern.

Such a pity to lose this archive comprised of the boards; imdb users have led me to many wonderful movies and shows that I wouldn't otherwise have known, plus the threads are always illuminating, even the hate-filled ones (better to know what's lurking out there than not know) and especially the civil, insightful ones.

I would pay a small fee to use the forum and keep it alive, and apparently some-to-many other users would, too; that imdb didn't offer the option tells us that shunting us to Faceblather etc. is going to yield $$$.

I went to IMDb almost everyday. Now that the boards are gone I might go there once every two or three months.

The way I see it is it is one thing to takes down the message boards but they should NEVER have took down the boards where you could discuss movies. After all IMDb stands for Internet MOVIE Data Base.
