Respectfully, that seems implausible. The internet is rife with trolling and hatred, yet it still stands. I'd bet my life that this decision is financially motivated:
--- Maybe Amazon (parent co.) is losing money on DVD sales and streaming because of negative reviews here and because of posts/messages directing users to free sites for content. (I doubt that the above cost Amazon all that much, but it's possible.)
--- More likely: Amazon stands to gain $$$ from herding everyone to FB because FB collects so much purchase-related data on users.
--- Also likely: Amazon stands to gain $$$ in some way that we can't yet discern.
Such a pity to lose this archive comprised of the boards; imdb users have led me to many wonderful movies and shows that I wouldn't otherwise have known, plus the threads are always illuminating, even the hate-filled ones (better to know what's lurking out there than not know) and especially the civil, insightful ones.
I would pay a small fee to use the forum and keep it alive, and apparently some-to-many other users would, too; that imdb didn't offer the option tells us that shunting us to Faceblather etc. is going to yield $$$.
