SOLVED: ID of a 70's prison film starring Hoffman and Hackman?

I remember watching this gritty film years ago (think it was made in the 70's).

Some violent con took a fancy to the nerdy Hoffman, who was assaulted and beaten, causing the even more violent Hackman to whack the shit out of the attacker in revenge?

Are you sure it's not Steve McQueen and not Gene Hackman? Is it the movie Papillon (1973)?

I deffo remember Hackman as the avenger.

EDIT- It was with Pacino in Scarecrow (1973)

No Hoffman, but I'm guessing there's violence just from the title.
