In reality - no. There are no records of Caracalla having a pet monkey. The creators may have taken inspiration from the real mad emperor Caligula, who - allegedly - wanted to have his favourite horse Incitato appointed senator.
But according to historians - from what I've read - it was more likely that Caligula despised the senate and said, ‘If any Roman fool can be a senator, why not my horse?’ and from that sigh the legend was born. However, Caligula was assassinated shortly afterwards, so even if he had planned it, it never happened.
