Thank you for this! I realize your post is 11 years ago but I just saw the movie and was looking for the same clarity.
Reason being, it was clear that it was "he" who was in the locket but since she was very much "in the past" as she had no modern conveniences, it didn't make sense. He was riding a motor cycle. Your suggestion of him being reincarnated and the fact that he says in the voice over that he's searching for something puts it all together. Don't know if you'll ever see this but thanks and it's a good post for others who might be wondering about the same story in that movie.
