because it was common for chemists back in that era to have poisons for dealing with pests/etc
because it's an Italian film.
Like most Italian films at the time they shot it all silent and would dub over the voices later.
Claudia Cardinale is completely dubbed over in the English version by Joyce Gordon, but actors like Henry Fonda redubbed all their lines too.
