I was wondering the same thing, watching his movie just now. From what my mom told me (born in 1942), anything less than a white wedding gown (even "off-white") was a signal that the bride was less than virtuous. I was very surprised to see they chose this color for a "society girl" from wealthy family. IRL, I feel like her parents would have forbid this color, regardless of her personal reputation or preference.
