So it hit me. In the end when his brother flys away, it was him, picturing his brother flying away like they planned. But, his brother was actually dead. His brother died from the step dad beating him to death. When Hanks is telling it in the end, he is telling it how he wants. Because that’s how he wants to remember that tragic and life changing moment, by picturing his brother finally escaping it!
