You would think they would as astronauts they would have been trained in survival both how to and mindset . They saw the scarecrows so they knew they weren't alone some intelligence had created them. You let your guard down this is what happens one of their party Dodge was killed and both Taylor and Landon were captured . They probably drove until either they ran out of gas or their car broke down. They said something about refugee camps in Canada but that was probably rumor. San Francisco to the Canadian border 950 miles so you would need more than one tank of gas . Most likely the Canadian government or what ever was left of it would have closed their borders and they would have run out of gas before they got anywhere near it. I was thinking the movie takes place in the late 1950's early 1960's. Katie would have been born during World War II. There were a lot of hasty marriages during that time. Maybe her father was killed during the war her mother was unable to raise her so she put the infant in an orphanage where she was eventually adopted by Hank & Grace. It first appeared in September 1980 in St Anthony's Messenger , Ms. Magazine August 1981 and Ellery Queen in April 1987 .Similar to the movie except that it goes goes into more detail about the daughter's death. In the movie Bradley checks on neighbors in the story she and the daughter do too . The original title was The Last Testament by Carol Amen . Carol Amen died in 1987 Trash collection ended shortly after the nuclear event most likely > People would go into hoarder mode don't throw anything away we might need it He was probably physically and mentally exhausted from the strain of dealing with the crisis at hand where there was no outside help coming. He had seen his colleagues and probably friends and family members die and was powerless to do anything about it. The problem with fleeing elsewhere was they didn't know what places were safe and what places were not . They had heard rumors such as refugee camps in Canada but that was all. Even if they got that far what happens if the border is closed, you can't turn back .Go south but you don't know if Mexican border is closed also .There was no news from outside except for the neighbor who was a ham radio operator and it seemed like he had fewer contacts as time went by . They could probably go 300 miles North South or East before running out of gas and then what ? Gas stations would run out quickly during a crisis due to panic buying so there would be no chance to replenish their supply. Another problem would be safety if they got into trouble there would be no one to help them no police fire tow trucks. They would be completely on their own. Any criminals would consider a mother and 3 children a tempting target also. radiation sickness and people getting sick for other reasons but now (after the war) there is no way to take care of them. Anyone on medication would be in big trouble once their pills run out. Pneumonia or the flu would be big killers too. I think he took people out on sportfishing trips . The man who was the basis for the character Frank Mundus originally took people out party boat fishing . He came up with the idea of "monster fishing" for sharks as a way to attract customers.
