I am surprised so many people think Caleb escaped when the story is so easy to understand.
This move is a retelling of the story of Cain and Able. In the story Cain kills Able because he is jealous and thinks God loves Able more and God knows about this but still continues to love him because God loves everyone. He is still punished though and is forced to walk the earth until he dies. In this movie, Ann is God, Caleb is Able and John is Cain. John and Caleb compete for Ann's love, like the story of Cain and Able and John gets jealous and thinks Ann loves Caleb more, even though she loves them both the same and then he kills Caleb. John then goes back to Ann and tells her that Caleb left. Ann obviously knows what actually happened based on how hes acting and even though its not shown in the movie Ann asks John if he killed Caleb and John confesses and then Ann kicks him out and hes forced to leave. An exact retelling of the story of Cain and Able.
