Here's a 2018 interview with Harris about the film----she spoke about how much harder it was to break through in the world of filmmaking at the time, and how it was muck harder for her to not only try to get a project off the ground, but just to even try to get it financed, mainly because she was a black woman. Unfortunately, Just Another Girl On The IRT remains her only full-length film to date: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/jul/12/leslie-harris-director-interview-another-girl-irt Other black female directors who put good and interesting indie films out around the same time as Harris ending up meeting the same fate----getting good critical hype for their debut film, and in some cases winning awards, but that never translated into long-time careers for most of them---mainly because the hype was mainly around male directors, such as Tarantino and Spike and others at the time. Cauline Smith (Drylongso) and Ayoka Chenzira (Alma's Rainbow) and Bridget Davis (Naked Acts) and Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust) have seen their films re-released and re-appraised in the last several years, and released on DVD. I've never seen Love Your Mama, directed/written by Ruby Oliver, and I actually liked Ride, a 1998 comedy drama directed/written by Millicent Shelton that I caught on TV some years back---she's continued to have a long career in TV, but like the other directors mentioned here, that's also her only film to date. Here's the interview with Leslie Harris:https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/jul/12/leslie-harris-director-interview-another-girl-irt Harris goes more in depth about the issues she faced just being a female director in general in this 2019 interview:https://alt-africa.com/2019/01/13/shecan-talking-to-leslie-harris-director-of-just-another-girl-on-the-irt/ His career actually continued until the late '90s, when he retired, but after his films started flopping in the early '80s---other than the Death Wish films---he went back to making movies in Britain only. I have to admit, I've never understood the hype over Cavill either----yeah, he played Superman once, but the truth is, he's rarely been in any major box-office hits, except for Man of Steel--which is mainly what he's known for. He's just always struck me as bland and boring as heck onscreen---to be honest, I barely remember him in Batman vs. Superman, even though he played Superman! I will say this----I did see him star in a British period war film last year called The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and to my surprise, not only was he actually pretty good in the lead, he even showed some real charisma and presence for once. As someone who's never ever thought he was all that, that's saying a hell of a lot. Black Adam was actually bigger overseas than it was in the U.S., so it did make its budget back---just not in the U.S. I saw it, and while I felt that it had a generic look, I found the character of Black Adam to be interesting as an anti-hero---the twist near the end which showed why he became a bad guy was actually pretty interesting too. I think the only reason it was less bigger in the U.S. was because people were getting tired of superhero films, and spinoffs from superhero films. It was nice to see the Rock play not only a superhero, but one who was basically an anti-hero---I though he was perfect for the role, and that it was something totally different for him----since he rarely plays the bad guy. Bottom line, Black Adam wasn't as bad as everyone claimed it was----I've seen far worse films than that. One thing I did like about Black Adam that no one ever mentioned or commented on---the fact that most of the main characters, including the lead, were mainly people of color. Other than Eternals (which I also liked) and the Black Panther films, that's not something you see that often in that genre. Walz didn't "lie" about his National Guard record. J.D. Vance took a comment Walz made over a decade ago and blew it up out of all proportion. One misspoken comment does not mean Walz was lying about this record. Stolen Valor is when someone completely makes up stories about having been in the service----which obviously, Walz never has, because he was actually in the service for 24 years. It's interesting how Vance never mentioned that when 9/11 came along, Walz, who was going to retire, decided to re-inlist for several more years, despite having issues with hearing in one ear. Oh, and by the time he'd retired from the service, his unit had been told that they might be called up overseas, but they did not actually receive any orders to deploy until until a few months after Walz had already retired. Which you magaheads would know had you actually bothered to do some actual research on the matter. Vance just spouted this bull**** about Walz because he himself is nothing but a maga mouthpiece for trump, and is spreading lies about people just like trump always does. As for the VP debate, since Vance has no real political accomplishments whatsoever to point to, what on earth is he gonna talk about? He's only been a senator for barely two years, and hasn't really been in politics long enough from an other politician to distinguish himself Walz is gonna runs circles around him on the issues, mainly because little ol' J.D. hasn't done a damn political thing to talk about. What a stupid thing to say. She's African-American because she was born and raised here in America--so she's American. Her father is a black Jamaican, therefore she's of African descent. Tired of people acting like they never heard of biracial people, or didn't even know they existed before Harris became VP. Black biracial folks have always been part of black communities throughout American history, and also because white communities rejected them because they were part-black. There's nothing new, weird, or strange about black biracial folks---I have plenty of them in my own family. Also, since America is a nation of immigrants, damn near everyone in this country has either parents, grandparents, or great-grand parents and beyond who were immigrants. Harris being the child of immigrants does not make her less American, it makes her American, period. I really have a problem with black people in particular claiming that she's not black, simply because she's biracial---that's so damn stupid. Pretty much every black American--me included--have biracial relatives in their family. And her father is a black man---I've never read anything about him where he claimed to be biracial or white or anything like that. Look up his picture. What I also don't like about all this nonsense BS around her being biracial is that people who are saying that she's not black are deliberately saying that because they don't want to admit that an accomplished and intelligent woman like her could be black and be in the position that she's in. It's like, they're trying to erase her blackness--as if a person can't be part of two or more cultures at once. I'm calling bull*** on that. Oh, and Oakland, California was nearly a half-black city when Harris grew up there, but it hasn't been like that since 2000. Look that up. Here's a guide to Harris's family tree:https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/politics/a61676033/kamala-harris-family-tree-explained/ Also, here's a deeper look at her Jamaican family roots:https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2024/08/politics/kamala-harris-browns-town-jamaica-dg/ Actually, Walz released his tax returns---something trump has never, ever done---and turns out he only owns one house, owns no businesses, and really isn't "rich" at all. Rich, old, white, male, and mean as hell is exactly what trump's sorry old, tired-looking punk a** is. That's why a lot of people can't stand him, and are getting sick and tired of his old a**. In fact, this article states that since trump's mental faculties have clearly been going downhill for years, and even more so lately, that he needs to step down like Biden was told to---because it's getting pretty damn hard for even the repubs to pretend like trump hasn't been losing his damn mind lately, rambling all this fake BS rumors about immigrants eating cats and dogs, which has been proven to not even be remotely true. Both the mayor of Springfield and the govenor of Ohio, who are both republicans---have said that these stupid rumors about Haitians eating dogs and cats are not even true at all. He just loves to bash black and brown immigrants every damn chance he gets, like the one in Springfield, Ohio---who all are legal immigrants, which he and his flunky J.D. Vance seem to keep forgetting. And since they are legal immigrants, they are also J.D. Vance's constituents, but apparently, he dosen't give a damn about them since they aren't white. Come to think of it, he dosen't seen to give much of a damn about his white constituents either, unless they have kids. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/columnist/2024/09/09/trump-old-incoherent-biden-age-mental-fitness/75138026007/ Oh, and I watched that clip---honestly, there's nothing there. As usual, you magaheads love making up bull**** where there is none. You right-wing magaheads are seriously fcked in the head, or you have no damn clue what being in a normal family that isn't fckd up is like. I watched the DNC convention, and nobody "abused" anybody there. And no, no normal person is "fine" with child abuse. Only seriously screwed-up in the the damn head magaheads cretins whose heads have been up trump's old, tired washed-up way-past over the hell a** for too damn long, says some dumb-a** stupid s*** like this. You couldn't find anything really messed up about Walz at all, so you just had to make some fake BS up about him. Yet you still act like trump's damn cult followers, even though he's a known pathological liar, a two-faced con man, and a convicted felon who should have been locked up, and is only running because he thinks it will keep his sorry old, dried-up a** out of jail. The fact is, people are getting sick and tired of trump's old whiny, fake loudmouth a** repeating the same old tired s*** he's been spewing for nearly a decade. His time has come and gone. Even republicans who like him said he lost the debate because he sounded like a damn crazy person, which he has been for years now. Anybody who believes a single thing coming out of his mouth needs to have their head examined. @BKB Just the fact that you believe anything on fox news show what a "low information" viewer you are. fox "news" is nothing but an entertainment channel filled with republican propaganda bull**** 24/7. You seem to conveniently forget how they recently lost a multimillion-dollar lawsuit for constantly pushing the orange dumbasses' lies about voter fraud---especially since they admitted that they never believed his lies, but kept pushing them anyway for ratings. The republican party keeps wanting to push the orange idiot back into office, even though more and more republicans are coming out and saying that they can't stand him because he's a f***ing deranged nutcase and nothing but a damn fraud who only cares about himself. Because that's literally all he is. He's only running because he actually thought it would keep his dumb a** out of jail. Harris is out there keeping the momentum going. She plans to do a sit-down interview at the end of this month, and will debate the orange idiot next month. She did plenty of interviews as VP, so of course, she's going to do another as the incumbent soon. The orange dumbass is running scared because Harris is currently kicking his old tired a** in the polls, plus no one gives a damn about J.D. Vance's weird couch-screwing a**. He has the lowest negative rating of any VP ever. trump the drump is now the oldest dude running, and the fact that his mental faculties have been going downhill for a long time is becoming more and more obvious by the day. Oh,please. All this bull**** you Harris haters love to throw at her just goes to show how f***ing racist and sexist your magahead asses are. The woman graduated from law school, was a prosecutor, became the first female district attorney and the first female attorney general of color in California---both of which are elected positions, by the way---then became a senator, and now VP. Let's be real----if she was a white man with that kind of amazing and impressive political resume, you'd say that he should be automatically running for president. But since Harris is a black woman, you want to talk all this bull**** about her, and push these stupid-a** fake bull**** nasty, hateful rumors about her. Because it's not true, but you f***ing racist haters don't care. You would rather support a worthless, unqualified for any office, crazy-a** deranged p.o.s. like the orange idiot only because's he's white, male and rich---not because he was a good president or anything---because he f***ing wasn't. He's only running because he's stupid enough to think it will keep his own sorry a** out of jail, anyway. Honestly, it really dosen't deal directly with being trans at all, even though one of the main characters admits to being gay. I probably would have never understood had I not read some interviews with the director before after seeing it, and she said it reflects her experience of becoming trans in some ways. There's a lot of metaphorical things in it, which made more sense after reading what the director explained about it. The lead actress and the lead actor are also trans and gay, respectively. Interesting and weird movie, though. You need to read up on how that type of surgery actually works---and no, it is not just something people do to "mutilate" themselves. Do you realize how insane that sounds, the way you put it? Do some actual research on the subject, please. Also why do you even care---it's not your business whether someone gets that type of surgery anyway. It's definitely a psychological indie horror film, and I kind of liked it because it was such an unusual and unsettling coming-of-age movie---just not the typical coming-of-age film you usually see at the movies. @TheHardSell: You clearly have no taste in films---some of the best films I've seen from time to time are low-budget films. This is an indie film btw, not a typical predictable Hollywood horror flick. It still became one of this year's biggest box office hits, because it's different. I saw it, thought it was unique, didn't like the gore---but I like the fact that it didn't look or feel like the usual generic slasher flicks that pass for horror films these days. It looked and felt different. Also this was not any kind of a "hipster film" whatsoever. It's a period thriller/horror drama set in the mid-'90s, which had some really good acting by the leads, and a few genuinely creepy moments. It could have cut down more on the gore, which it does use sparingly, at least. Even though you all hate it, it's become a huge international hit, regardless. @liscarkat That's not even what the hell "woke" means. You just described the orange dumbass's mental state, since that's how he acts all the damn time. The term "woke"--for you idiots who don't even have a clue what it actually means because fox "news" and the magahead right-wing echo chamber have literally distorted the hell out of its original meaning--simply mean to be aware of what is going on around you, socially and politically. That's all it means, not whatever bull**** you or that fake-a** fox "news" claims it is. It was a slang term invented by African-Americans in the late '60s/early '70s to also describe the political moods of that era. It was brought back to life by some of the first Black Lives Matter activists for protests back in 2014. Since none of you even bothered to take five seconds to look up the actual meaning of the term, here's plenty of info about it here, along with some history: https://www.politifact.com/article/2023/mar/07/what-does-it-mean-to-be-woke/ https://www.npr.org/2023/07/19/1188543449/what-does-the-word-woke-really-mean-and-where-does-it-come-from Right-wingers always love to steal political slang terms from the left-wing, because they can't come up with any ones of their own worth a damn anyway, or ones that anyone actually gives a f*** about, lol. https://theconversation.com/heres-what-woke-means-and-how-to-respond-to-it-219588 Just look up a film's title online to see if it has any happy gay sex scenes in it. And quit saying "fag"--that's such an outdated term. Lots of happy LBGTQ couples probably watched this film along with you---you just didn't know it, lol. I totally disagree about the concert staff employee being any kind of a "magical negro". He clearly was a true-crime fan who was a little too much enamored of true-crime cases---and obviously never considered the fact that the person he was talking to could be the actual suspect. He wasn't even there specifically to help the main character---he simply was so excited about being part of the secret sting to take down this suspect that he didn't use common sense, and just started blabbing to the wrong person. There was a funny indie satire that came out earlier this year called The American Society of Magical Negroes, which has fun with and makes fun of the concept--that's worth seeing, lol. Also, Trap was fun to watch, plus the brother was part of a significant change in the plot. Superior to what? A fckg cockroach? You wish you were superior to anything. You magaheads are such whiny-a** little snowflakes, lol.
