I feel like the show should have ended at season 5, which some modifications to the original ending so it ended on a positive note.
I mean after Eric Kripke (who lets be honest was the heart and soul of Supernatural) left the show kind of when down hill.
Dean and Sam characters weren't as deep or complex as before and it felt like the show as stuck on how to proceed in developing certain characters like Castiel ( I truly believe the only reason they kept this character on was because he was so popular with the fans, even though he didn't really need to be part of the story anymore).
In conclusion the show should have ended at season 5, sure it would have been short but it would have been perfection. Just like Breaking Bad ending it short on a high note.
