I didn't read The Golden Compass book, but I read a commentary saying that the compass in the title referred to the kind you use to draw circles on paper maps. Not the atheliometer, which is really weird.

Looks like a double-dose of Kubrick homage, with A.I. Artificial Intelligence, plus the look of the Grady not-twins from The Shining, with those long hallways. And that Talky Tina episode of The Twilight Zone. Sadly, no Telly Savalas character in the trailer.
