I thought at the time Jake Gyllenhaal was by far the best choice and I still do now. Tobey Maguire was ok at the geeky nerdy aspect but came across too wimpy as Spiderman. Of all the others names list here - Elija Wood would have been similar to Maguire. Josh Hartnett has the charisma and physicality - but not sure he would be convincing as the geeky, nerdy kid Parker. Aside from those two - none were at all suitable for the role in my opinion. It was a bit strange watching Jake playing Mysterio in the recent movie - playing the villain opposing Spiderman.
