I think Alex knew the entire time that this particular site, of ALL places to choose from in the USA, was the Seven-Harrowing-Hells version of the State Fair.
He was broke to the point of a pact with the devil, figured out the BnB was the ultimate vortex to Hell, knew what he had to do, and went full speed ahead with his worship.
I assumed that (because of financial insolvency and his latent Satanism) Alex set the whole thing up in order sacrifice as many people as he could to Satan in order to aquire whatever folks aquire when they sell their soul to the Prince of Darkness.
Demons can't enter unless you invite them in so you know those cloaked spectres were SUMMONED by Alex....ALEX!!! He only addressed the palpaple,all-consuming terror when cornered and his only apparent concern was to keep everyone calm long enough to get them into their sacrificial gear and chained to the walls.
I think I over thought it.
