The story won’t work in the politically correct 21st story. Nobody would buy it.
The irony is that at the beginning of the film, Jenny chides Oliver for profanities.
I read the sequel novel. It was also made into a film, starring Candice Bergen. Half of the film is Oliver reconciling with his father, and the other half is falling in love with Candice. But after visiting Candice’s sweatshop factory in Homg Kong, Oliver is reminded of his ancestors’ sin and breaks the relationship. Nonetheless, Oliver decides to work for his father, consoling himself that he is creating jobs for the working class. It is as if Erich Segal retreats from all the gains made in Love Story.
How many of you know that Segal wrote another sequel, called Man, Woman and Child?
She is so scary at her death bed that only someone who loves her and tolerates her can be near her. She blasphemes until the moment of her death.
I agree. Oliver was clearly troubled and traumatized about the pressure to perform that was imposed on him all his life. But his father, Barret the 3rd, was probably in the same way. When his father comes all the way to Ithaca to see Oliver play hockey, Oliver should’ve been courteous to his own father. But Oliver turns down his father’s invitation to have dinner with him, saying that he has to eat with the team. Also whenever his father asks about law school, Oliver shows allergic reactions, saying he might be an ambulance chaser rather than a Supreme Court Justice.
Oliver’s hypocricy is evident when he excitedly proclaims to Jenny that their future son will be the super jock at Harvard. Oliver’s ambitions in life are no different from his father’s. Like his father, Oliver wants to enjoy a privileged East-Coast status passed on to his children.
The foolishness and contradiction of the 60’s rebellious generation are embodied in Oliver Barret.
