You are probably ultimately right in terms of where the relationship would end up mostly because Jamal *was* poor and is black.
But I think it was left open much more than you are alluding to here ...
I think Jamal has enough unique things going for him where Claire and maybe her wealthy family would come around (e.g. his writing skills, basketball skills, being a seemingly good human being, college recruitment, inheritance of Forrester's estate, etc.)
By the end of the movie Jamal was a real catch
In previous scenes in the movie Jamal was rummaging through a huge cabinet full of unpublished writings (in William's apartment) ... these are worth millions alone in modern day dollars given the demand for William's writing.
Also in previous scenes (the Yankee Stadium scene) Forrester made it clear that his entire immediate family had died all within a short period of time, which is what turned him into an introverted alcoholic.
Given that Forrester was a hermit the remaining years of his life and the only person he had a relationship with was Jamal (someone he grew to love and respect), I have no idea who else he would leave his shit too.
I think "Into The Wild (2007)" is a movie that draws heavily from literature based on a lot of dialogue and themes in the movie (Dickens, London, Thoreau, etc.)
The entire scene with William Forrester going to campus and reading Jamal's words was all about Crawford getting his ass handed to him in the end by Jamal
Yes, if you paid attention to any of the ancillary stories/themes in the movie (e.g. the racism, classism, etc.) the missed free throws on purpose was obvious.
As a fan of both of these movies the characters have almost nothing in common except for both being poor.
Will = a genius on the level of some of the greatest minds in the history of the world, who was also very troubled due to suffering from severe child abuse and neglect.
Jamal = a smart teenager with a passion for literature and writing who also happens to be an excellent athlete and overcome racism in american culture.
Will was potentially the next Isaac Newton/Albert Einstein (or maybe if we get a GWH2 he will be lol)
Jamal might someday write an excellent book but he was nowhere near as uniquely gifted as Will Hunting
