It was meant as a compliment, it simply looked visually way ahead of its time, at the time 1995.
There arent a whole lot of Jesus films so it's a tie between Passion and The Last Temptation. Both strive to tell the same story but come from totally different places. Mel's Passion is deeply personal film, owerwhelmed with visceral feeling. It surely is a fantastic looking film. Scorsese's Temptation is a bold intellectual character study almost, which requires lot more attention from the viewer. Also the score by Peter Gabriel is one of my favourites, it simply works wonders for the film.
Looking forward to Passion II: The Resurrection !
