The Safdie Brothers hate their audience. View all posts >

Completely disagree. I thought Annie was the truly tragic character of the movie. She loses her mom, then loses her daughter almost immediately afterwards, blames herself for everything, tries her best to make things better, falls prey to a conniving cult worshiper, terrifies her husband, terrifies her son, and on and on and on. She seriously can't catch a break through the whole movie. God, no. Not even close. I went to see this with a friend on his recommendation. He also talked me into watching Good Time first. The Safdie Brothers seem to be allergic to making a movie where the characters are worth redeeming and rooting for. This one got close to winning me over in the third act, and then squandered it by the big spoiler I won't reveal. What a waste. Frustrating from start to finish. Hopefully they'll write and direct a movie that resolves in a way that satiates the audience after beating them in the head for 2 straight hours some day. I made a MovieChat account just to tell you that your review of this film is exactly how I felt about it, too. Nothing redeeming about it at all, other than I suppose the little progress we see out of Nick in the freaking credits. I liked the stylization, the colors in a lot of shots, and the music, but the story and the characters were just infuriating. View all replies >
