I have this book in my audio book library that I bought many years ago on sale but never read. I forgot all about it but will make a point of trying it out soon based upon your comments. I think you have a point about all the adaptions. Especially tried and true authors like Jane Austen with built in audiences. I’ve read them both. Even though they have some dark themes I find them both to be cozy reads. To give his girls exposure as celebrities maybe? Are they trying to become actresses? I didn’t know he had a bunch of daughters but now I do. I had to read this for my book club. I thought it was dry and focused too much on the FBI and the villain(s) rather than the more interesting Osage characters. The author bogged the story down with too many boring details and too many names. I skimmed a lot to get through. I think most in my book club thought it was good subject matter but agreed the writing was dry and disjointed. I’m looking forward to a more palatable movie version. Some of the casting I question but we shall see how it plays out. Lol! If nothing else she looks lovely in the costumes on the show. The fashions of the time period are very becoming to her. I’ve only seen her in The Leftovers before this. She looked plain bordering on homely in that. Regarding #4. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the show. But wasn’t Tony kind of trying to buy Chris’ loyalty to keep him around so he could continue to groom him to take over as his number 2 man? Chris was pulling away, maybe to take up his writing, can’t remember, but then Tony gave him the name of the guy who supposedly killed his dad and Chris was so grateful to Tony. And when Chris confronted him the guy denied it in what I thought was a very convincing fashion so I thought something stank about that whole interchange. And now that’s been confirmed by the movie. Anyway right or wrong that was my impression of the storyline that has stuck with me all these years! The movie wasn’t too difficult for me to follow although I do think it’s a film you have to pay close attention to. I saw it back when it first came out and loved it. However, I read the book last year, and was very glad I knew the basic characters and plot. The book had so many different threads and minor characters that made it much harder to follow than the movie. If I hadn’t seen the movie first I probably would have given up on the book. I’m glad I kept with it though - it was very immersive and a read I will never forget. I’ve seen Wolf Hall twice and didn’t make the connection! Probably because she’s merely a supporting player rather than the supposed lead as in Call the Midwife. So much great going on in WH she was overshadowed and her shortcomings weren’t as noticeable at least to me. Clearly she made no impression on me though. I haven’t seen her in anything else so have no idea if she improved. I agree. The Jenny Lee actress just couldn’t bring the emotion. I didn’t realize this until she left and I didn’t miss her at all. I only started actually tearing up at episodes and really connecting with the storylines after Jenny left. I’m only on season 6 and I still enjoy it. I haven’t seen any of her movies but I just finished her autobiography, Self-Portrait. Laura is at the top of my list to see. Tobacco Road sounds interesting as well. View all replies >
