I feel the same way you do about the beginning.
We spend a whole movie learning about his backstory, motivation and goals and get to know his character very well. Then they chop off his head at the start of the film. All that character development is gone and we get a completely different Thanos, character wise, for the rest of the film.
I've been telling my friends that the best part of Infinity War was Thanos and the worst part of Endgame was Thanos.
Disappointed!
