I think you are absolutely right! She's either gotten a face lift or done a bunch of other work (botox, fillers, etc.) to part of her face, but has done nothing to her mouth, which looks non-existent. You wouldn't even know it was there if not for all the vertical lip lines around it. I think if she just goes to a good cosmetic doctor, he or she can fix everything. No shame in getting some work done -- even a lot of it -- but you really have to go to someone who knows what they are doing!
Women like Hilly are nothing new. They’ve been around since the dawn of time and they will continue to exist in every church, school, workplace and neighborhood. Some women outgrow it, but others are just born to be bullies. I just don’t understand how you can sleep at night though, if you are a person like that - especially when she wouldn’t give her maid a loan. It was bad enough that she wouldn’t help her, but she had to be such a jerk about it…just disgusting. And the way she treated Celia was unforgivable.
* SPOILERS * I am so glad you posted this! I watched this movie yesterday (and I've been a fan of the book forever). The thing I asked myself as I was watching it this time was, why were these people "called" to lead by Mother Abigail? And I think Nick, Tom, Larry, etc. were picked specifically because they had disabilities and flaws. My thought is that Stephen King was creating these characters to be like a lot of Biblical figures who were very ill-equipped to lead. Based on what I've read, in the Bible, God often called on the "meek" because they would be less self-centered and less likely to assert themselves for their own good; and they would be more likely to submit to doing the will of God. I totally forgot about how Nick couldn't talk, but Tom could hear him in his dreams; and I also forgot about how Randall Flagg could hear and see what others were doing, but he couldn't read Tom's thoughts because of his disability. It's such a masterful story!! Every time I read it or watch it, I can't stop thinking about it for days!
Such an insightful post about the movie. I realize it was written ELEVEN years ago - but it's pitch perfect in so many ways. (For example, I also hate the way they turned Starr into a caricature with that ridiculous southern accent.) The story itself is so powerful though -- the attention to detail, and the way the characters are so real. Definitely one of my all-time favorites.
