I'm not saying he was a bad fighter, just not as good as he was later. Think about it: how much time did Steve actually train with his new strength after he received it in First Avenger? He could not have been as good as Natasha at hand to hand combat, hence her criticism of his fighting skills in Avengers in the Loki fight.
However, it seems clear to me that he has been training with SHIELD and probably with Natasha by the time of Winter Soldier

Here is another thought: does my his "reunion" in the past with Peggy detract from how he became friends with her again in the present. It is almost like Steve rejected who she was, her life in his reality, for some other he wanted

Thanks for the response. But physically, she is nowhere near Thanos strength right? That would make her equal to the Hulk or a (fit) Thor. Did she rebuff his punch with the energy she was generating?
I can't buy that she is physically as strong as Hulk or Thor. And the way Thanos throws her around in the other scenes seems to demonstrate it as well
