He killed him because he was getting too loose. He put a lot of new rules in place like no tardiness, stick to the routes, etc.

It's not bad but not great either. Nobody besides Earl really gets fleshed out at all.

It's better to look at it him as a hypocritical sociopath. He means well (in a twisted sort of way) but he sure isn't above killing to save his own skin or groom an apprentice if need be. Adam is a bit different, I'm not sure Jigsaw knew Amanda sabotaged the trap.
