Isn't this a prion disease? Similar to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease?
I agree with your take on it, too, except for one thing: since he drove off after hitting the boy, how do we know the boy died? Ok, he's small, and Trevor was going fast, so it's likely that he died, but nothing in the movie made it clear whether the boy was killed or had injuries, but survived.
